What “Black Mold” Actually Means
The term “black mold” is commonly used to refer to Stachybotrys chartarum. However, many mold species appear black but are not Stachybotrys, some dangerous mold species appear in other colors, and only laboratory testing can definitively identify mold species.
Health Effects of Stachybotrys Exposure
- Respiratory issues: chronic coughing, wheezing, shortness of breath
- Allergic reactions: sneezing, runny nose, itchy eyes, skin rashes
- Neurological symptoms: headaches, memory problems, mood changes
- In severe cases: organ damage from prolonged high-level exposure
Basement-Specific Concerns
Basements create ideal conditions for Stachybotrys growth: high humidity, limited ventilation, and cellulose-rich materials. Basement mold is particularly concerning because HVAC systems often draw air from basement areas, potentially spreading spores throughout the entire home.
When to Call for Emergency Remediation
- Visible mold covering more than 10 square feet
- Household members experiencing health symptoms
- Mold discovered in HVAC systems or air handlers
- Mold present in living areas (not just storage areas)
