- Turn off electricity: go to your circuit breaker and turn off power to all affected areas
- Assess structural safety: look for sagging ceilings or buckling floors before entering
Documentation Steps (Next 15 Minutes)
- Take wide-angle photos showing overall damage extent
- Take close-up photos of all affected materials and the water source
- Record video walking through all affected areas
- Do this before moving anything. Adjusters need to see the original damage state
Protection Steps (While Waiting for Professionals)
- Remove valuables, electronics, and important documents from affected areas
- Elevate furniture on blocks or aluminum foil to prevent moisture absorption
- Do NOT use fans or HVAC. This spreads contamination to unaffected areas.
